Chapter twelve
It was nearly two weeks after the bombing and Jo was grateful that Lisa Hennessey's old apartment had been empty. When Lisa had first come to work for Jo as her admin and right hand, she'd been given the apartment on the same floor as Jolene, just the other side of the building. Between the two apartments there were a couple of rooms they used as office space or a cozy meeting chamber, the elevator bringing people into a small lobby. There were stairs that led up to the roof and down to the next floor, but most used the elevator. When Lisa had first married â her husband, Ian Sommers, had moved into the apartment with her, but when she found out she was pregnant, they bought a house of their own and moved out. That unit had been updated and decorated as a place for out-of-town dignitaries to use if necessary â and it had rarely been used. Now? It would become Ashton's new home.
They moved Ashton into the luxury unit and closed off that floor so only Ashton and Jo were able to access it. That meant Lisa's office and desk were moved down a floor and Jo's office ended up under her living room.
For the most part, Ashton had been able to maintain control. They learned that it became more difficult for him, the longer he was away from Jo. For Jo, if she couldn't touch him several times a day, she began to feel edgy. Jace assured them this was a textbook mix of the sire bond with a new vampire, and the mating bond being so new.
That evening, they were both sprawled on Jo's couch, their legs tangled together as they worked on their tablets. Soft jazz music played in the background and the windows were open to the warm air.
Ash reached out a hand to pick up his phone and Jo glanced up just in time to see the phone lift from the coffee table and float to his hand. Jo's mouth dropped open, but Ashton didn't seem to notice.
"Uh, Ash? Do you realize you just floated your phone to your hand?"
"I what? Huh?" Ash looked up and then at the phone in his hand, then back at Jo. "I did what?"
"Your phone. It was on the table, out of your reach. You just reached out your hand and your phone floated up and over to your hand." Jo put her tablet down on her end of the table and pointed to it. "Do it again."
"I don't know what I did, Jo. I just needed my phone and I knew it was on the table, so I reached for it while I kept reading. I didn't consciously do anything."
"So? Try consciously doing it." Jo hugged her knees to her chest and rested her chin on them.
Ash let out a huff of breath and put his tablet and phone in his lap, then reached for Jo's tablet. It bobbled a bit on the table, but didn't lift.
